Haricot Gallery is thrilled to present ‘Strip’, a solo exhibition of new works by Murray Clarke.

Clarke's earlier paintings looked closely at clothing, the weave of wool, cotton, synthetic blends, as a quiet system of hierarchy, deciding whose bodies and desires get seen, sold, or erased. ‘Strip’ keeps that same close attention but turns it on a different kind of surface: the hundreds of images we scroll past online each day, one replacing the next, most of them gone before they've properly registered.

 

Working from memory, his own photographs, and found imagery, Clarke gathers material without ranking one source above another. A personal image sits alongside a half-remembered moment, a stranger's photo, a stock image. Everything arrives on equal footing, the way it does in a feed.

This comes through with work which is composed of bands of unrelated imagery painted directly onto a single canvas, pressed against one another with nothing tying them together. It's not unlike scrolling, hundreds of images passing by, one after another, each gone before you properly register it.

 

Elsewhere there is work which is loose and gestural but interrupted by one narrow strip painted with total precision. Sometimes the strip connects to the image around it, sometimes it doesn't. Either way, the strip doesn't bring the rest of the painting into focus, it just sits there, sharp and separate, as if two different ways of looking are competing for the same space.

 

Clarke takes the idea further, entire paintings held within a single strip, each one complete, but confined to a narrow band that reshapes how it's seen. There's no bigger picture hiding behind it. Across Clarke’s solo show, one thing stays the same: every part of these paintings is made with slow, careful attention, the kind of care a scroll never allows.

Murray Clarke (1992) lives and works in London. He graduated from Kingston School of Art in 2019 with an MA in Fine Art.
